A Common Last - novel in progress

A Common Last is my first novel. Work has been underway for two years on this contra dance fantasy.

A young musical duo, dance caller Tryn Martee and luthier Crispin Felding, are commissioned by the Kaddish Arts Ministry to travel the Hollish Isles to capture for posterity the folk dance forms and associated music of the various peoples of the islands. Although their work is sponsored by the Kaddish government, Tryn and Crispin soon find themselves entangled in the efforts of the native Hollean people as they struggle to remain free of the growing industrialism of the Kaddish mainland. Staying in the homes and calling in the local dance halls of these rural folk, Tryn and Crispin develop an understanding for their ways, their communities, and their strong connection to the land. As this appreciation turns to sympathy, Tryn and Crispin must decide if their efforts to record this dying culture should instead be turned to preserving it... by joining in their fight.

The Swamps That Close

front cover of book The Swamps That Close is a collection of poems deeply rooted in the voice and nature of the American South. These poems view that experience on the long continuum of time from prehistory through rural America to a bristling technological future that reaches far but somehow never quite escapes its primordial urges. Like the frog packed in cool mud and water whose stillness may explode in a crash of predatory death, these poems live on the edge of violence, yet this world is filled with rich smells, sounds, humor, music and hope.
